“Injustice in the end produces independence.” – Voltaire
“Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He was a means to an end.” – Walt Disney
“One’s continued independence depends on whom he chooses to be dependent upon.” – George Stablein
Above are quotes from people from various walks of life regarding a fundamental mindset all beings have in one way, shape, or form and to various degrees: the will to be independent.
This month is Independent Agents’ month at First National Title Insurance (FNTI). You have your FNTI flags and know about the contest we’re running, but I wanted to remind you that each of you is an independent being and part of a work family who has embraced the independent spirit.
As alluded to by Voltaire, a French writer during the era of enlightenment, every single one of you experienced an event in your career, which at the time seemed to be unjust and unfair. It was instead the catalyst to create a new destiny leading to the independent you and the independent company you work for or created. We should look back to that event not with horror but with glee for it led you to where you are today.
When Walt Disney, a captain of industry, described a cartoon mouse and all it meant to him, I believe he was describing the symbol of all that he and his company created (movies, theme parks, etc.). We are no different in that each of us has a logo, symbol, or other “thing” that we have created (or have yet to dream of) and look to it as a means to an end. Your symbol maybe the first title policy your company issued, the first closing statement, the logo you created after much discussion, or the name of your company after equally long periods of debate. Whatever it is, look to it as a sign of where you started and where you are headed.
What an executive vice president and barrister (me!) of the best underwriter in the country was trying to say is independence and dependence are not mutually exclusive. In other words, you need us as a partner in your independent trip almost as much as we need you to achieve our dreams. Chris Phillips spelled out many of our initiatives created with the only group in mind—YOU.
Thank you and here’s to continued Independence.
